Spine Surgery of a young boy

Manik Khatua is an 18 year old boy suffering with Arnold Chiari Malformation Syringomyelia and Thoracolumbar  Kyphoscoliosis.  His spine is bent to the left side and the he is suffering from back and leg pain due to which he is significantly and functionally disabled. He needs to undergo a Foramen Magnum Decompression Posterior spinal Instrument Scoliosis Correction and fusion T8-L4 at the earliest. His father is a farmer, he has two younger sisters, and an elder brother who is at present taking care of the family.

He is admitted at Manipal Hospital, Bangalore(Hospital No.1431270). The cost of the surgery in a general ward is Rs. 4 lakhs, the implant itself costs Rs. 3 lakhs (screws which are used to straighten the spinal cord).  The hospital will charge only for the implant; they have waived off all other charges. He has received Rs. 60,000 from the Chief Minister of West Bengal and the family has raised Rs. 80,000.  The Manipal foundation has offered Rs. 25,000 and there is a shortage of Rs. 1,35,000.

15 Aug, 2013 - He is Walking Now!
Manika Khatua came back to the hospital for a follow-up visit. He came walking, is doing really well, has put on weight and has no pain or discomfort. He was advised to come back after a year for general checkup. Thanks to all donors for bringing the smile back to the face of this little boy
