Roby is living with his mother, aged 81, a pensioner; and his wife, who is working as a lab technician in a hospital nearby. He has 2 young children aged 14 and 9 years. The family has no means of raising Rs. 40 lakhs required for treatment. They collected Rs. 15.15 lakhs through a public campaign, of which Rs. 10 lakhs is already deposited at the hospital as advance. The current treatment involves one injection per month for a year, each costing Rs. 25,000 at a total of Rs. 3 lakhs. Rajan was working as a manager in a hotel in Delhi. He came back to Kerala three years back and was staying in a rented house at Aluva. During the flood of 2018, he lost all his possessions. The family then shifted to a rented apartment at Kakkanad. Rajan’s wife is ill and cannot go for work. His daughter completed 12th grade and is working in a call center now. The only income for this family is his daughter’s salary, which is barely enough to cover their rent and daily expenses. JCI Nalukody with support from Junior Jaycees, the children’s wing, organized a tree plantation drive on World Environment day. JCI took order from people for different fruit trees, by publishing on social media. Those who gave the order were supposed to have pits ready for planting trees in their compound. JCI members procured the saplings from nurseries and took them to these houses. They planted the trees together and also took an oath promoting awareness of environment protection and importance of trees.
